They're Doing in America What They Executed with Christianity

The Trump movement's most revealing and distinctive instances – not its most crucial, nor cruelest, nor most hazardous, nor most senseless, but potentially its most enlightening – occurred earlier this fall. Over the span of multiple weeks, the nation's leader began displaying the public his designs for a gilded ballroom double the dimensions of the White House and then commenced unilaterally ripping down the eastern section to erect it.

He has done things countless times more severe – the current estimate of fatalities from his cuts to foreign assistance is 600,000 and rising, and presently a study forecast his fossil fuel policies would cause deaths 1.3 million more. But nothing as definitional. No other president would have attempted – truly, no former commander would have imagined – independently wrecking significant portions of the presidential residence in order to erect a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the direct cooperation of some of the nation's most affluent, the majority of whom have business with the government.

We moved from 'the meek shall inherit the planet' toward 'the humble will perish to cholera'

As disorienting as it is to watch the chief executive try to upend the established notion regarding democracy and replace it with its complete opposite, there exists a significant segment among Americans who should not find it completely novel. That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations close to half – who were educated within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have witnessed over the years as rightwing evangelical churches turned the Jesus we learned about into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. At its most basic, they turned a figure of compassion into a symbol of animosity who approves specifically the brutality that he condemned in scripture; this transformation occurred more gradually, across decades rather than months, however it is still unsettling in the same ways, a confusing personal impact for countless people.

A Harmful Christianity Gains Ground

Hence I shall explain the Jesus from my childhood, because theoretically the Savior is the core of any Christian faith, and since the rapidly expanding group among Americans may possess limited understanding about him since they are skeptics or uncertain individuals or spiritual independents. I raise no objection with any of these traditions, nor with alternative spiritual paths; however I believe that there are pearls of great price within Christian narrative.

It is emphatically not the narrative of a powerful ruler arising; instead, a baby is born to parents without shelter in an automotive shelter, who are forced to hastily depart to another nation to avoid undercover officers. The child matures in simple surroundings, an employed craftsman; his teaching concerns compassion for fellow humans, particularly for the poor – and not a sentimental love, but practical compassion, demonstrated through nourishing and protecting. Christ's response to violence is to present the opposite cheek – not as an act of compliant endurance, but as a method to educate the assailant; his approach to wrongdoing indicates that whenever an individual takes your coat you should give the person your additional clothing also.

The apparent and direct truth that the Savior in biblical accounts requests a type of extreme compassion focused on the impoverished has consistently rendered Christian religion rather a controversial faith: attractive to the masses, but due to its natural unconventionality requiring to be controlled. During the 1950s it was contained via weakening – Protestant Christianity was so prevalent that it practically blessed current circumstances.

A Conflict for the Highest of Us

Therefore I have felt heartened to see the steadfast resistance to Trump arise over the last twelve months. It has provided significant comfort to participate in developing the movement that has taken to the streets through repeated demonstrations, and likely has encouraged voters to participate in significant amounts in interim political contests. We must have to continue it, and through comparable resolve, displaying national flags at every demonstration and calls to the finest aspects of American history.

We're going to be asked ... regarding how you welcomed the immigrant? Did you accept these individuals and receive them or reject?

The country is optimally secured, to put it differently, by reference to the finest within national tradition, exactly as the Christian faith is most protected by relationship to that which renders it special and beautiful, particularly the pattern of the Savior. In both situations does it mean feigning the worst regarding America and religious tradition never occurred; it signifies both modesty and belief, a combination that genuine American Christians should be comfortable with.
