The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Whenever a prominent awards ceremony approaches, there’s always a demand to include of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.

Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
