In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The late summer revolt was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Political Discussions Taking Place
In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several leading political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
