European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.

Additional Updates Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has halted attempts to reduce federal homeland security funding to states that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The official ruled the case was “a further instance” of tying government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, alongside an active border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to accept a limited number of migrants from the US in return for increased assistance, after signing a formal agreement with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit to demand the removal of a political figure’s name from a well-known cultural institution in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with historical international actions.
