Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opener Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in several conversations following England's loss in the second Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of play – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the side, Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There is no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
