A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its role in national projects. They were completed at an accelerated pace, defying forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party demanded an urgent pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a full technical review. The party declared that the situation "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these strategic projects.
